A man has been arrested after he attempted to steal an ambulance while paramedics were dealing with a seriously ill patient in the back.
At approximately 8.45am the Dublin Fire Brigade crew were treating the ill patient on Mountjoy Street in the north inner city. has learned that a male, aged in his 20s, sat into the driver's seat and attempted to drive off.
However, he crashed straightaway into a street sign just two metres away.
A source said the ambulance crew were able to restrain him until the arrival of Gardaí and the Garda armed response unit.
"The paramedics responded immediately and their quick thinking averted a potentially fatal situation from developing."
A fire engine was sent to the scene to deal with the four potential patients.
One man was arrested and charged under the road traffic act at Mountjoy station.
He was then released and is due to appear in court at a future date.
A spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade said the matter is currently under investigation.
