Another one for the fire lads.  The brother-in-law has passed the interview with the fire officers.  He's down to the final 20, with 10 jobs at the end of it.  He's got his fire yard assessment and then one final interview.  This is with HR-types from the County Council.

What sort of an interview is this?  What type of questions will be asked?  He has already done the interview where the officers assess his suitability for the job.

From being an interviewer in the public sector, I've always had a HR person in my interviews.  I'd ask the job-specific questions and would decide if someone is appointable or not.  I'd normally have a colleague with me.  The HR person would usually only ask non-contributory questions, like:
1) If you were to be offered a job, what notice period do you need to give your current employer?
2) Are you an EU citizen?  If not, will I need to organise a work permit and visa for you?
So it's more logistics and negotiating terms.

What sort of questions will a HR person ask at a fire brigade interview?  And why weren't they in on the other interview panel?

When I did mine the HR person asked what sort of notice would I need, how I'd adapt to shift work, what other services dcc provide. That sort of stuff. Nothing too taxing

Loosely termed as "organisational awareness " and they go through your employment history. Make sure he has watertight reasons for employment gaps.
We trained hard ... but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.
