Irish paramedic who was helped by brave crew of Rescue 116 helicopter says he’s ‘haunted’ by the tragedy

A paramedic who was assisted by Rescue 116 just three weeks before it went down off the Mayo coast says he’s haunted by the tragedy.

The heroic helicopter crew came to the aid of Jim Leonard as he tended to a teenager who dislocated his knee while out running at the foot of the Sugar Loaf mountains.

During a brief radio chat they decided it was safer not to land the Sikorsky S92 chopper in the field to avoid hitting overhead power lines and spooking livestock.

The Irish Coast Guard team’s last words to Jim and his colleague Kevin Gill as they flew off were: “Thanks very much and take care… I’ll talk to you again soon.”

Three weeks later, all four courageous crew members died when the helicopter crashed near Blackrock Island off the coast of Co Mayo in March last year.
