A very entertaining movie alright . . . .

. . . . . . .but a load of bollocks in terms of what actually happened in October 1993.

Its a film that has been widely slated for its treatment and depiction of the Somali's . . . . .as some kind of evil, ignorant stupid animals.

. . . . . . in the words of New York Times critic Elvis Mitchell, "converts the Somalis into a pack of snarling dark- skinned beasts ... it reeks of glumly staged racism." (Dec. 28, 2001)

There is so much info out there that contradicts a huge amount of what this film alleges . . . . .everything from the setting and background to the incident itself.

Any one who believes George Bush was a humanitarian needs their head examined.

It reminds me of the Film "Rescue Dawn" . .another war film where the facts are completely molested by Hollywood. .

Although George bush senior sent in he 15th marine division under the auspice of un mission unsom by the time black hawk down happens it was bill Clinton who had sent in task force ranger which was a combination of delta force combat search and rescue (csar to the yanks) and a ranger battallion (or part of it) this was along side the un unsomII who already had Pakistani troops here 24 of who Had been slaughtered on patrol in Mogadishu leading to the yanks already there in a peackeeping capacity assisting them launching 10(ish) TOW missiles into a safe house where elders from many large tribes were meeting and killing them all solidifying the hatred of he yanks and their version of peace keeping (blowing everyone up)

I agree with you NGA it's not historically correct but it's not a documentary it's ahollywood action flick

if you want historical versions read the book by mark Bowen which is based on interviews he did with American troops on their return from Mogadishu for the American version of what happened

the international red cross trims the numbers killed down by about a thousand on the yanks estimate

although it's a great action flick I think the message sent across is that arrogance in he us military leaders led to too many deaths on their side and bad planning makes for piss poor performance

For entertainment was very good, gritty and as always Hollywood dramatic. No doubt funded by US dollars to help the public over there believe they are fighting the good fight and all the enemies are evil.

Anyhow, when is the Aer Corps getting some Black Hawks???

I know this is the TV Thread, but anyways, the guy who wrote Black Hawk Down, Mark Bowden also wrote another book, "Killing Pablo", the hunt for Pablo Escobar, the biggest cocaine dealer/seller/smuggler of all time. Basically at the height of his reign he was flying converted Boeing 737s full of coke into the USA.

A brilliant read, I've read it several times. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who'd be into that kind of thing. It's available now as a small paperback too. The amount of agencies who were involved is unreal......

Considering the pay cuts, i'm considering flying coke into the US, is there much instruction in how to do it in the book?

Read the Black Hawk Down book and it is much better than the film. It seems that the biggest problem that they had was communication. Three levels of communication, those on the ground could only talk to the choppers or something, and they were relaying info to the surveillance plane above. Any instruction took ages to come down to the people who needed it.

And I'm not a fan of the baseball caps. Think they look cheap and nasty. Ok for firearms and specialist duty, but they look shit for patrol.

Thanks for that didnt know what it was.

I think if theyre worn right, correct fit and not out of shape they look well

that's bang on lad it because of this communication problem it went tits up but it didn't have to it was arrogance of the head man to thnkthat he needed the info before the men on the ground and it was his idea to have it relayed back to him first silly man learned the hard way
